The essence
Marble fragment depicting a hand holding a clipeus, characterised by careful anatomical rendering and classical-inspired modelling. The distinctive position of the fingers and the attention to detail lend the gesture a sense of naturalism and elegance.
The hand was probably made in the second half of the 19th century as a restoration for an ancient sculpture. Its workmanship and subject reflect the strong interest in classical art that characterised 19th-century artistic production.
