The essence
A statuary marble sculpture depicting Polyphemus, the famed Cyclops of Greek mythology, son of Poseidon and central figure in one of the most celebrated episodes of the Odyssey. The character is immediately recognisable through his distinctive single eye, symbolising both his primordial nature and extraordinary strength.
The bust is distinguished by the expressive modelling of the face, the richly carved beard and hair, and the powerful sculptural presence of the composition. A significant example of the nineteenth- century fascination with subjects drawn from classical mythology, particularly admired within the Grand Tour collecting tradition.
